How to Install and Use Android Studio

Android Studio is the official Integrated Development Environment (IDE) for Android development, built on JetBrains' IntelliJ IDEA. It offers everything needed to build apps for Android devices, including code editing, debugging, testing, and emulation tools. This guide explains how to install and use Android Studio on Windows, macOS, and Linux.

Step 1: Download Android Studio

Visit the official Android Studio website:

https://developer.android.com/studio
Click the download button and agree to the terms to begin downloading the installer for your operating system.

Step 2: Install Android Studio

For Windows:
  1. Double-click the downloaded .exe file
  2. Follow the Setup Wizard prompts
  3. Select the components to install (Android Studio, SDK, Emulator, etc.)
  4. Choose the installation path and click Next
  5. After installation, click Finish to launch Android Studio
For macOS:
  1. Open the downloaded .dmg file
  2. Drag Android Studio into the Applications folder
  3. Launch Android Studio from Launchpad or Finder
  4. Complete the Setup Wizard and download required components
For Linux:
  1. Extract the downloaded .zip file
  2. Navigate to the extracted folder and run:
    ./bin/studio.sh
  3. Follow the setup wizard to download the SDK and necessary components
  4. Create a desktop entry for easier future access

Step 3: Configure Android Studio

The setup wizard will guide you through:

  • Installing the latest Android SDK
  • Setting up an Android Virtual Device (AVD)
  • Choosing an installation type (Standard or Custom)
  • Downloading required SDK tools, platforms, and emulator images
Once configuration is complete, Android Studio opens the main dashboard.

Step 4: Create a New Android Project

  1. Click New Project from the Android Studio welcome screen
  2. Select a project template (e.g., Empty Activity)
  3. Set your application name, package name, save location, language (Java/Kotlin), and minimum SDK
  4. Click Finish to create the project

Step 5: Explore the IDE Interface

Android Studio provides several panels:

  • Project: File and directory structure
  • Code Editor: Where you write and edit your Java/Kotlin and XML
  • Layout Editor: Design and preview UI components
  • Logcat: View logs and debug output from your app or emulator
  • Build Output: Shows build status and errors

Step 6: Run Your First App

  1. Click the green Run button or press Shift + F10
  2. Select an Android Emulator or connect a physical device via USB
  3. Android Studio will build the app and launch it on the selected device

Step 7: Install Additional SDKs or Tools

To install other SDK versions or tools:

File → Settings → Appearance & Behavior → System Settings → Android SDK

From here, you can download and install:

  • Older SDK versions
  • SDK Tools like NDK, CMake, and Emulator
  • Different Android platforms

Step 8: Update Android Studio

To keep your IDE and SDK tools up-to-date:

Help → Check for Updates

Follow the prompts to install the latest patches and improvements.

Step 9: Use AVD Manager

To manage Android emulators:

Tools → Device Manager

You can create, edit, and launch virtual devices for testing different screen sizes and API levels.

Step 10: Build and Generate APK

  1. To generate a signed APK:
    Build → Generate Signed Bundle/APK
  2. Choose APK and click Next
  3. Enter keystore credentials and click Finish

The APK will be saved in the app/release folder.
